Franklin, Indiana

Small Town Charm a Short Drive From the City

Just twenty minutes south of Indianapolis you’ll find a city with the perfect blend of history and innovation, peppered with scenic walkways and family-friendly activities and attractions.  Established in 1823 and named after Benjamin Franklin himself, Franklin has all the makings for a unique, fun-filled family day trip.

It’s no surprise that Franklin was named a Playful City USA for 2017, a recognition program honoring cities and towns that ensure kids in their communities get the balanced and active play and lifestyle opportunities they need to thrive and live healthy lives.  Between the family aquatic center, community parks, and extensive county-wide trail systems, Franklin provides more than ample opportunity for outdoor physical activity.

Downtown Franklin is perfect for a leisurely stroll by its charming historical buildings, ice cream and candy shoppes, cozy storefronts, and the picturesque Johnson County Courthouse building.  Franklin’s attractions are all within walking distance to each other, which is convenient and ideal when bringing the kiddos along. You can eat, shop, watch a movie, get some ice cream, or take a hike all without having to go back to the car, and with plenty of bathrooms nearby.  Park-and-walks are my favorite!

The food in Franklin does not disappoint.  From local diners, to pubs, fast food, and sweets, there is a multitude of kind-friendly dining options to choose from, most within walking distance to downtown attractions.  Fun fact! Franklin is home to the first Ritter’s Frozen Custard in the USA, opening in 1989 and still operating today. Franklin is also home to Franklin College, a liberal arts college that opened in 1834 and was the first in the state to admit women.  Holler!

Franklin is right off of Interstate 65, so you don’t have to drift too far off course if you’re looking to add some variety to your family adventure day.  If you need to stay overnight, clean and affordable lodging is available by the 65 exit.

Whether you’re in town for a sports event, visiting family, passing through to a future destination, or just looking for a road trip, Franklin is the perfect stop for some slow-paced family fun.  Rich in historic tradition and picturesque city streets, you and your kiddos are sure to fall in love with Franklin’s down-home charm!
